Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) Bundestag Faction
Overview
The Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) Bundestag faction is the largest party group in the German Bundestag. It has been the governing party since 2005, forming coalition governments with the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and, since 2013, with the Free Democratic Party (FDP).
Policy Positions
The CDU/CSU has traditionally been a conservative party, but its policy positions have become more centrist in recent years. On economic issues, the party supports free markets and limited government intervention. On social issues, the party is more conservative, opposing same-sex marriage and euthanasia.
In foreign policy, the CDU/CSU is a strong supporter of the European Union and NATO. The party has also been a vocal critic of Russia and China.
